Announcing Impress for GIS 2.1

We are excited to announce our latest GIS release – available immediately. Impress for GIS integrates SAP and GIS systems, enabling customers to increase productivity, improve customer service and enhance business analytics to make better business decisions.

Impress for GIS contains a broad range of functionality supporting asset data management and maintenance and operations for field assets. Impress for GIS 2.1 introduces a map-based browser that enables users to view and manipulate complex SAP asset structures comprised of both mapped and unmapped assets. Users can now traverse complex asset hierarchies, place unmapped objects on the map via drag-and-drop placement, and perform common work management processes on both mapped and unmapped components.

Impress for GIS 2.1 also introduces new capabilities to provide customer service and maintenance departments with a clear picture of device infrastructure, service consumption and customer information by enabling map-based access to data stored in SAP’s IS-U/CCS (Customer Care and Service) module.

Impress continues to embrace standards to ensure our solutions fit into enterprise architectures by introducing enhanced support for Service-oriented architecture. Impress for GIS 2.1 provides out-of-the-box web services for common Impress business processes that can be consumed by composite applications like SAP XI, and the ability to provide any Impress process as a web service. Impress for GIS 2.1 also supports new partner releases, including MySAP ERP 2005 and MS SQL 2005.

Customer Spotlight

Aquarion Water Company (AWC) Goes Live with Impress for GIS 2.0

Aquarion Water Company and Impress successfully implemented Impress for GIS 2.0 at AWC’s headquarters in Bridgeport, CT. AWC is one of the 10 largest investor-owned water utilities in the US, serving 219,400 homes and businesses, or approximately 677,000 people. Impress worked with AWC and their partners to integrate the ECC 6.0 SAP PM module with Arc GIS 9.1.

As part of the implementation, Impress mapped six GIS layers and synchronized the data with SAP. Newly implemented business processes now allow the user to create, edit and update SAP equipment and functional locations from the GIS front end while maintaining the information in both SAP and ESRI. The system went Live on January 2nd, 2007 and AWC is planning on adding functionality during a second phase planned for later this year.

Tips & Tricks

Energy Policy Act Information

In August of 2005 the United States Congress passed the Energy Policy Act which changes the start and end dates of daylight saving time for the United States starting in 2007. Clocks will be set ahead one hour on the second Sunday of March instead of the current first Sunday of April. Clocks will be set back one hour on the first Sunday in November, rather than the last Sunday of October. This will make electronic clocks that had pre-programmed dates for adjusting to daylight saving time obsolete and will require updates to computer operating systems.

As a result, it may be necessary to install relevant third-party patches to address the general system clocks. Furthermore, be sure to check all systems for time issues on the previous and new DST dates of March 11th, April 1st, October 28th and November 4th.

Impress Software’s products will not be affected directly by this change. However, if you prefer a more pro-active approach to avoid any potential issues, you may choose to suspend activity on all of your systems during the period when DST starts or ends, and then check the system time information before commencing work.
